We’ve all heard of spiritual awakening, but what does it really mean?
And what myths surround this transformative process?
Let’s start by setting the stage—what exactly is a spiritual awakening?
It’s something we all go through.
It’s the moment we wake up to our true selves, moving beyond the ego’s perception of the world.
🕉️ The Role of Ego in Awakening
The ego creates a version of reality, shaping how we see and interact with life, all in an effort to keep us safe.
But when we awaken spiritually, we begin to see beyond this framework, stepping into a deeper understanding of who we truly are.
As we navigate life, the ego plays a vital role—it’s here to keep us safe and ensure our survival in the human experience.
But while the ego works hard to protect us, its perception can sometimes be skewed.
This doesn’t mean it’s wrong; it simply reflects the perspective we held at a particular moment in time.
During a spiritual awakening, the ego begins to loosen its grip on these perceptions, allowing us to expand our awareness.
We become more self-aware, intuitive, and conscious of the spiritual realm and the magic it holds to help us manifest the reality we truly desire.
It’s important to emphasize that the ego isn’t bad—it’s here to guide us.
It warns us of danger, like a cliff ahead, or steers us away from relationships that may not align with our soul’s journey.
The ego often detects lower vibrational frequencies that aren’t meant for us, serving as a compass as we navigate life’s system.
We’re not going to dive deeply into the ego today—that’s a conversation for another time.
Instead, let’s focus on the myths surrounding spiritual awakening.
🦄 Myth #1: Awakening Happens Overnight
If awakening happened in an instant and we suddenly became 100% self-realized, most of us wouldn’t even know how to process it.
The journey of awakening is intentionally slow because it requires us to unwind old perceptions and allow the ego, along with other aspects of our being, to participate in the process.
Awakening is a lifetime achievement, a gradual unfolding.
Each step reveals something new—an outdated perception gives way to a fresh realization, a deeper connection to the spiritual world, and a clearer understanding of ourselves.
It’s a beautifully transformative process, and it simply cannot happen overnight.
The slower pace is a gift.
Imagine if it all happened at once—you’d be mourning countless deaths.
Spiritual awakening often involves many “deaths,” as we release old versions of ourselves, outdated beliefs, and past realities.
These moments of letting go, though challenging, are essential to our growth.
And they remind us that awakening is not about rushing to the finish line but embracing the journey as it unfolds.
🧚♀️ Myth #2: Only One Spiritual Awakening
This one always makes me laugh because it couldn’t be further from the truth.
Spiritual awakening isn’t a one-and-done deal.
When you begin to awaken, the process continues—you awaken, and then you awaken again, and again, and again.
And yes, you can experience more than one dark night of the soul.
These moments often come when you’re leveling up, recognizing that the reality you’re living in no longer serves you.
Your consciousness starts to rise, pushing you to self-realize and seek new truths.
This marks the beginning of yet another awakening.
But let’s be clear—this isn’t a simple, straightforward process.
It’s like peeling back the layers of an onion.
Each layer represents a piece of your consciousness that’s ready to be shed, revealing something deeper underneath.
Sometimes, you find yourself in the midst of an awakening without even realizing it.
You didn’t ask for it, but it’s happening because you’ve been doing the work.
🧙🏽♂️ Myth #3: Awakening is Always Blissful
This myth couldn’t be more misleading.
While moments of bliss and positivity are absolutely part of the awakening process, they’re not constant.
Spiritual awakening can be messy, challenging, and even gut-wrenching at times.
When you’re navigating a dark night of the soul or peeling back layers of old identities, it’s natural to feel discomfort or sadness.
You might realize that certain aspects of yourself or the life you’ve built no longer align with the reality you’re striving to create.
It can feel like parts of you are dying, and that’s perfectly normal.
Awakening isn’t about being positive 100% of the time—it’s about seeking the truth, and sometimes the truth hurts.
Acknowledging that something you believed in or participated in no longer serves you can be a tough pill to swallow.
But on the other side of that transformation lies the reward.
Awakening brings chapters—not mere moments—of bliss and positivity.
These chapters are filled with beauty and growth, but challenges remain because they’re an essential part of the human experience.
And that’s what makes the process so unique and so beautiful.
The challenges push us to grow, to transform, and to reconnect with the deepest truths of who we are.
🧜🏾♀️ Myth #4: Following a Specific Spiritual Path
This myth is a fascinating one because, while it doesn’t resonate with my personal experience, I know it’s something many people encounter—often tied to religious or spiritual structures.
Let me be clear: you are your own guru.
Spiritual awakening is about connecting with your true self, not about adhering to a specific teacher, path, or ideology.
Teachers and gurus can absolutely play a supportive role—they can guide you, offer insights, and help you uncover deeper truths within yourself.
But they’re not here to fix your problems or provide all the answers.
If you’re drawn to multiple modalities or spiritual teachings, follow what resonates and leave the rest behind.
Awakening is a personal journey, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
While I didn’t grow up in a religious household, I chose to explore spirituality in my own way as an adult.
I attended a non-denominational Christian church because, at that time, my soul was seeking a sense of connection.
That experience was meaningful because it scratched an itch I’d felt for so long.
And that’s the beauty of this process—you’re free to explore, connect, and discover what aligns with your unique journey.
While I didn’t grow up in a religious household, I was deeply curious about different spiritual philosophies and teachings.
For me, the journey was about exploration—dabbling, researching, and studying various spiritual paths to uncover what aligned with my truth.
And that’s what matters most: your truth.
What resonates with your soul?
The incredible thing is that our truths can be different, yet equally valid.
Spirituality offers a vast array of teachings, philosophies, and practices—yoga, for instance, isn’t a religion, but it contains spiritual elements and philosophies that I find deeply meaningful.
Similarly, I’ve found beauty in certain traditions within Hinduism.
But do I resonate with everything?
Absolutely not.
I’ve learned to pick and choose the aspects that light up my soul and serve my highest good while letting go of what doesn’t resonate.
This process isn’t about judgment.
It’s not my place to judge someone else’s path or the philosophies they connect with.
My role is to discern what feels right for me—what aligns with my spiritual journey and supports my growth.
The beauty of awakening is that it doesn’t require adherence to a specific religion or philosophy.
It’s about curating the practices and teachings that work for you.
Trust yourself to navigate this path in a way that feels authentic and true to who you are.
👻 Myth #5: Awakening is for the Spiritually Gifted
Let’s debunk this one right away: spiritual awakening is not reserved for the spiritually gifted.
In fact, we all have spiritual gifts.
Some of us are more tapped into them, while others might not have realized their potential yet.
But trust me, those gifts are there—waiting to guide you.
Think about that gut feeling you get when something doesn’t feel quite right.
That’s your intuition, a core part of your spiritual gifts speaking to you.
And here’s the thing: you don’t have to call yourself psychic, gifted, or even intuitive to be connected.
These abilities are innate.
They’re part of waking up to your true self, which is deeply connected to your higher wisdom.
Whether you’re in the thick of an awakening, just beginning the process, or finding clarity at its conclusion, aspects of your higher self have been guiding you all along.
They’ve brought you to this exact moment, cheering you on and saying, You’ve got this.
Awakening is messy, magnificent, and beautiful.
Your higher self is calling out for you to recognize your truth, and the journey is uniquely yours.
With free will, you get to decide what that process looks like—how you engage with it, how you grow from it, and how you embrace the messy magic of becoming who you truly are.
🙏 Embracing Your Spiritual Gifts
It’s time to let go of the idea that you’re not intuitive, not gifted, or not “tapped in.”
These thoughts don’t serve you, and they couldn’t be further from the truth.
Every single one of us is spiritually gifted in our own unique way.
We’re all deeply connected to this incredible, cosmic universe—a force that wants to guide, support, and remind us of one essential truth: we are whole, magnificently connected, and inseparable from creation itself.
Whether you call it God, Creator, or any sacred title, this universal frequency is profoundly beautiful.
When you awaken to it, you’re embarking on a journey of self-discovery that may stir up emotions and challenges requiring your love and attention.
This isn’t a “one-and-done” process.
Awakening is an ongoing experience—a continuous unfolding of truths that help you recognize who you truly are.
Through this process, you’ll experience symbolic deaths—the release of old aspects of your psyche, personality, and identity that no longer serve you.
These pieces of yourself need to fall away to make space for growth.
This isn’t something to fear; it’s a gift.
Each release propels you to greater heights, where you can fully embrace the life you deserve.
Remember, spiritual awakening isn’t a singular event—it’s a lifelong journey.
Each time you awaken, you’re uncovering deeper truths about yourself.
These truths will help you navigate the inevitable mess and chaos with grace, reminding you to give yourself permission to reach for the stars and live your best, most authentic life.
With love and blessings,

Hey Amy Robeson here. Thank you for joining me on this podcast where we talk about spirituality, the awakening process, mental health in so much more. Join me weekly to get your weekly dose of spirituality and medicine. I look forward to seeing you on the inside. Hello and welcome to today’s episode! I’m so excited you are here! We all have heard of spiritual awakening, but what is it? And what are the myths of going through a spiritual awakening? Today I’m going to talk about that and what the truth is. First, let’s talk about what a spiritual awakening is so we can set context and foundation for this conversation. We all go through a spiritual awakening. That awakening is when we wake up and what we’re waking up to is our true self. We’re moving beyond the ego perspective of the world that we created. And let me say that slightly different. So you understand. The ego creates a perception of the world. This creates your reality. The ego is here to keep you safe.
And when you navigate your life, the ego is here to keep you safe and make sure you stay alive in the human experience. And with that being part of its job, the perception on what it perceives can be skewed. And it doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It just means it’s skewed. It’s a perception that you perceived at that particular moment in time. And when we go through a spiritual awakening, the ego starts to loosen its grip on that perception. And you become more self-aware. You become more intuitive. You become more conscious of the spiritual realm and its magic to assist you in manifesting the reality you truly want. We are not deeming the ego bad here. I want to make that really, really clear because the ego is here to go. Hey, be careful, there’s a cliff over there or hey, that person’s probably not a good person to be in a relationship with because it knows part of why you’re meant to be navigating part of this system, and it can usually detect lower vibrational frequencies when they’re not meant or a part of your soul’s journey.
So we’re not going to dive deeply into the ego today. We’re going to dive more into the myths around spiritual awakening. Myth number one is awakening happens over night. Man, I wish this was true. Like I really do because life would be so much easier. But it would also be very boring because we don’t we’re not we’re not learning anything. If if it did happen overnight, if all of a sudden you were 100% self-realized, I don’t even think most people would know what to do with that information. However, it’s a slow process and it’s because our psyche has to unwind some of the perceptions, and the ego also has to participate in this journey as well in other aspects of your being. It doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a life time achievement that you awaken to something new. That perception was old. It’s outdated. Here is the new perception. Here is what I realize about myself. Here is my connection to the spiritual world, and it’s such a beautiful process and it does not have to happen overnight and it will not happen overnight.
And that is the beautiful thing, because if it did happen overnight, you would be mourning a million deaths and more because there are so many deaths that we have to go through during the spiritual awakening process. And we go through many more than just one. Which leads me to myth number two, that you only have one spiritual awakening. This is so false. I am laughing because when you start to awaken, you are going to awaken and awaken and awaken and awaken, and you can have more than one dark night of the soul. And those dark nights of the soul are when you start to up level when you go. This is the reality I’m in. This is no longer working for me. My consciousness wants to rise. It wants to self-realize. It wants to learn new truths. I’m going to go through another awakening. And it’s not as simple as I’m saying it. It is this onion layer where just these layers start being. Starts to be peeled away from your consciousness, and then all of a sudden you’re in an awakening and you didn’t ask for it.
You’re just there because you’re doing the work. Which leads us to myth number three, which is it’s bliss all the time. It’s positivity all the time. That is not true. When you go through a dark night of the soul, when you’re going through an awakening, it can be gut wrenching at times. It can be so hard at times where you’re just like, wow, that is no longer necessary for me to participate in this identity that I have is not supporting the reality that I want. And so it feels like there are aspects of yourself that are dying, and it is perfectly normal to not be positive. The entire process, this this blissful feeling, is obtainable during certain parts of your awakening, especially at the end of that metamorphosis. But it’s not 100% of the time while you’re going through the awakening. And it’s because it’s messy, it’s dark. You’re looking at old identities, old truths, old misconceptions, old perceptions that are no longer serving you. And what you’re seeking is the truth.
And sometimes the truth hurts. Sometimes the truth means you have to admit that that other thing that you believed in or were participating in is no longer in alignment, and that can feel really sad. That can be a big pill to swallow at times. But the beautiful thing is the reward at the other end of the awakening journey that you are on, there are moments of bliss, there are moments of positivity. And I’m not saying that they’re just little milliseconds. No, they’re they’re chapters of bliss and there’s chapters of positivity. But just because it’s a chapter of bliss and a chapter of positivity does not mean you don’t have challenges. You’re going to have challenges. That’s a part of the human experience, and that’s what makes us grow, and that’s what makes us unique, which is so darn beautiful. Myth number four is an interesting one, because I know that I didn’t fall into this, but I know that there are people that do, and it’s a big one because it it can relate back to religion.
And that is you have to follow a specific path or a specific spiritual teacher or guru. First off, you are your own guru. When you’re going through your awakening, what you are doing is you’re realizing and connecting to your true self. Teachers along the way can assist you in recognizing the truth of who you are, and assist you in seeking deeper truths within yourself. But your teacher is not going to fix your problems. The guru is not going to fix your problems. And if you’re interested in many different modalities, many different spiritual Teachings. Take the ones that resonate and leave behind the parts that don’t. I know for me, I did not grow up in a religious household, and so I didn’t have that particular upbringing. But I did, as an adult, decide to go to church, and I went to a non-denominational Christian church, and I absolutely loved it because it was something that my soul was seeking connection to. When I was a kid and I got to itch that itch, that was so important.
But I also was very interested in many other different philosophies and different spiritual teachings. And so for me, I wanted to dabble and look and research and study all sorts of different spiritual teachings that assisted me in understanding my truth, because my truth is what’s the most important to me. Your truth is, what’s the most important to you? And we can have different truths, and they can both still be true. That’s the cool thing about it. And there’s so many different teachings. There’s so many different philosophies. There’s so many different spiritual scriptures and and manuscripts that we can research and investigate and dive deep into and figure out what works for you. I know for me, like, I love yoga. Now, yoga is not a religion, but there are spiritual practices and spiritual philosophy in there. I also love different traditions and different spiritual teachings in Hinduism, and I think it’s really beautiful. So I gravitate and I, I, I gravitate towards the ones that resonate and do I gravitate towards all of it?
Absolutely not. I pick and choose the things that resonate with my soul and my soul just lights up and the things that don’t. I leave it behind, I let it go. I practice non-judgment because it is not my place to judge when someone is really into other philosophies or not. What my job is, is to judge if this feels good to me and if it serves my highest good to research, to study, to practice that particular practice. And so you don’t have to follow very specific religions or very specific philosophies. You can pick and choose what works for you and what does not. The fifth myth is it’s only for the spiritually gifted that you go through this awakening only if you’re spiritually gifted. That is so far from the truth. First off, we all have spiritual gifts. Some are super tapped in and some are not. But they’re waiting. They’re like, you know that gut feeling you get when you’re like, mhm. I have just a bad feeling about that. That’s your spiritual gifts talking to you.
That’s your intuition. There is nothing wrong with using your intuition. Also, just because you haven’t used your intuition in a while doesn’t mean it’s not there for you to use. And you do not have to consider yourself psychic. You don’t have to consider yourself gifted. You don’t have to consider yourself intuitive. First off, you’re going through something. You are waking up to your true self, and your true self is super connected. There are aspects of you that have been guiding you along the way to this particular moment in time, to your particular awakening that you just either went through or that you’re in the process of going through, or that you’re coming out on the end of and these aspects of you are cheering you on and going, you can do this. Let me show you the way. Your higher self is shouting from the rooftop to recognize what your truth is, and it is magnificently messy and beautiful, and you have free will, and you get to decide what that looks like and how it is.
But you do not have to continue to tell yourself that you’re not gifted, or you’re not intuitive, or that you’re not tapped in or you’re wishing or whatever it is that’s coming up for you. Everyone is spiritually gifted in some way, shape or form. We are all tapped in to this cosmic universe that wants to support us, that wants to guide us, that wants to assist us in recognizing that we are whole and that we are magnificently connected and that we are not separate from the universe. God, creator, creation, whatever sacred title you give, that magnificent frequency. It is so darn beautiful when you are awakening it. It is going to bring up things for you that are going to require extra special love and attention for you to process, to work through. And it’s not a one and done situation. You are going to constantly learn new things about yourself. You are going to learn how to die many times. And what I mean by that is there are aspects of your psyche. There are aspects of your personality, your identity that you are just going to let die because they’re no longer serving you, and you deserve to give yourself permission to reach for the sky, to soar to new heights where you live your best life.
And when you’re going through your spiritual awakening because you’re going to have more than one, remind yourself that you’re discovering your truth, and that’s will assist you in navigating through the mess and the chaos with ease and grace. All right, my friends, please share this with a friend. Make sure you like and subscribe. And if you’re on YouTube, make sure you hit that bell so you get notified when we release a new episode. I look forward to seeing you in the next one. Take care. Bye.
